Chapter 18

“Let It Snow, Let It Snow, Let It Snow”

December 17, 1:22pm

She was able to catch Amy and grab her work bag before her roommate drove away, and then she had some time to kill before her shift started. Rachel didn’t have anyone to buy gifts for, and the crowded mall was honestly her worst nightmare, so she just hid in the employee lounge to wait it out.

There were some women there when she arrived, none of whom were part of her seasonal team, sitting on the couches and sipping coffee.

“And this was us in Cancun last year,” one of the women was saying, holding out her phone. Rachel caught a glimpse of a light-haired couple with a red-headed child between them, all grinning with the beach in the background. “It was so nice to get away from it all, you know? Don’t get me wrong, I love my mall family, but the hustle and bustle of this season can really take a toll.”

“Sorry to interrupt,” Rachel said, immediately wishing she had minded her business but also really wanting a private minute to sit with her thoughts before she had to deal with the rabid crowd of holiday shoppers. “But the lounge is just for Santa’s Village employees until the end of the holiday season.”

All three women turned to look at her. She realised she recognized them all; the brunette on the left, Carol, worked in Guest Services next to the food court and refused to let Rachel or any of her team use their water fountain, making them come all the way up here when they needed a drink because the fountain was for ‘customers only’; the woman in the middle, showing off photos of her vacation, was that bitchy lady Liz who made Rachel wrap a million gifts without paying; and the one on the right worked for one of the make up stands that was always giving backhanded compliments to the people who walked by to convince them to shop there. Excellent, of all the people to kick out of the lounge, she had to choose the three most likely to pitch a fit.

Which, for the record, was exactly what they did.

“This lounge is for mall employees,” Carol said, cradling her coffee gently in both hands. “We’ve worked in this mall longer than you’ve been alive, sweetheart.”

Rachel really was trying to turn over a new leaf when it came to her coworkers, truly, but she’d also been a little salty ever since this lady had refused to let her fill up her water bottle a few weeks ago, so she felt a little rush of anticipation. She’d just faced down a potential murderer, these women were nothing.

“Technically, policy states that from November first to December thirty-first, the employee lounge is reserved exclusively for the mall’s seasonal hires, as there are no other spaces in which the employees can keep their personal items secure.” Rachel smiled at the women sweetly. “Unless I’m mistaken? I can call Curtis and check if you like.
